2 Indian-origin women lawmakers have been inducted into the Cabinet by the Government of Ontario. This includes one lawmaker who proposed the 1984 Sikh massacre motion in Parliament of Ontario in April 2017. The 2 Indian-origin women lawmakers were inducted by the Premier Kathleen Wynne into the Cabinet.

Harinder Malhi the 38-year-old lawmaker representing Brampton-Springdale has been appointed as the Status of Women Minister by Kathleen Wynne. She is the daughter of Gurbux Singh Malhi the first Sikh Canada MP, as quoted by the New Indian Express.

Malhi had moved a motion in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in April 2017. The House passed the motion and extended accreditation to the 1984 Sikh riot in India as a massacre. This move was strongly disapproved as misguided by India.

Indira Naidoo-Harris another India-origin lawmaker representing Halton in Provincial Parliament was promoted as the Minister of Education. She will retain the portfolio of Early Years and Child Care Responsible Minister.
Premier Kathleen Wynne said that these two new Ministers will bring crucial skills and knowledge to the Cabinet. This is even as the government continues with its efforts for creating more opportunity and fairness for residents of Ontario, added Wynne. She said that the government aims to ensure that everyone gets equal opportunity for growth in a transforming economy.

Premier of Ontario said that this is the reason that it is crucial to ensure that the changed Cabinet reflects both the geography and diversity of the province.

The provincial elections are just 5 months away. The decision by the Ontario Premier is being viewed as a move to suppress the increasing popularity of the New Democratic Party. It is led by a Sikh.
